What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a short markdown file at the root of a site that gives language models and AI agents a curated reading list: what the site is and which pages matter. Jeremy Howard proposed it in September 2024; version 2 of the spec was published in August 2026. It has no allow or disallow rules, so it does not control crawling - that is robots.txt's job.

Will llms.txt help my rankings?

Not in Google. Google's AI optimization guide says you can ignore AI text files like llms.txt because Google Search does not use them, and server-log studies find that AI crawlers rarely request the file. It is useful mainly for coding agents and documentation tools that fetch it when a user points them at your site. Our evidence review of llms.txt covers the data.

How does this generator build the file?

  • It reads the sitemaps listed in your robots.txt, or /sitemap.xml, and falls back to links on your homepage.
  • It puts your homepage first, then pages your homepage links to, then the newest sitemap entries.
  • For up to 20 pages it uses the page title and meta description as the link name and note.
  • It skips noindex pages, pages whose canonical points elsewhere, pagination, login, cart and search pages, and other domains.
  • It groups links by the first part of the URL path and moves legal pages and overflow into an "Optional" section.

How do I publish it?

Save the file as llms.txt in your site's root folder so it loads at https://your-domain.com/llms.txt with a 200 status and a text/plain content type. If your site is a single-page app, check that the URL returns the file and not your app's HTML: in Common Crawl's July 2026 crawl, 40% of llms.txt responses came back as HTML. Our llms.txt check in the free audit verifies the format.
