How to Measure Your AI Visibility in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews

"Are we visible in AI search?" is now a question every marketing team gets asked, and most answer it by typing a few prompts into ChatGPT. That is the least reliable way to measure it. A January 2026 study found that the same prompt almost never returns the same list of brands twice. This guide covers what you can measure reliably today: the free reports Google and Bing added in 2026, how to identify AI assistant traffic in analytics and logs, what paid trackers add, and how to read the numbers.

Key Takeaways

  • Start with the free first-party reports. Search Console has a Generative AI performance report for AI Overviews and AI Mode (rolled out to all sites by August 31, 2026), and Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.
  • Referral traffic is identifiable. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, and GA4's default channel group includes an AI Assistant channel.
  • Server logs show crawler access. OpenAI and Perplexity publish IP lists for their search crawlers, so you can verify that hits are genuine.
  • Single prompts are noise. In SparkToro and Gumshoe's study, the chance of getting the same brand list twice was below 1 in 100 for ChatGPT and Google AI. Track visibility across many prompts and runs instead.

What "AI Visibility" Means

There is no standard definition, and vendors calculate the same-sounding metric differently. Semrush's definitions are a useful vocabulary:

Metric What it counts
Mentions Prompts in which your brand appears in the answer
Citations AI answers that cite your domain as a source
Share of voice Your mentions compared with competitors'
Sentiment How positive the mentions are
Position Where in the answer your citation tends to appear

Ahrefs, for example, weights share of voice by search demand, so the same brand can get two different share-of-voice numbers from two tools. Compare a metric over time inside one tool, not across tools.

Two layers are worth separating. Citations (your page used as a source) come from crawlable, well-structured pages. Mentions (your brand named in the answer, linked or not) come from your reputation across the web. You need both, and they are measured differently.

1. Search Console: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google counts AI Overview and AI Mode appearances in the regular Performance report under the Web search type, and its help documentation explains how: a click on a link in an AI Overview counts as a click, and all links in an AI Overview are assigned the same position.

Since June 2026 there is also a dedicated Generative AI performance report, which Google says it rolled out to all websites worldwide by August 31, 2026. It covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative AI features in Discover, and breaks impressions down by page, country, device and date. Two limits to know: it reports impressions, not clicks, and it may not appear for sites with very few AI impressions.

If the report shows nothing at all, check Settings > Search generative AI: since August 2026 Search Console has a control that includes sites in AI Overviews and AI Mode by default, and excluding a site removes it from both.

What to do with it: list the pages that earn AI impressions, compare them with the pages that earn clicks in the regular report, and look at what the AI-visible pages have in common.

2. Bing Webmaster Tools: Copilot Citations

Bing's AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, counts how often Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries and select partner integrations cite your pages. It shows total citations, cited pages and a sample of the grounding queries behind them. A June 2026 update added intents, topics and citation share, defined as the share of citations attributed to your site. It covers Microsoft's surfaces only, and grounding queries are a sample, not the full set.

3. Analytics: Referral Traffic From AI Assistants

ChatGPT. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, for sites that allow OAI-SearchBot.

GA4's AI Assistant channel. Google Analytics' default channel group now includes an AI Assistant channel for visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok. It does not include AI Overviews or AI Mode, which arrive as Google organic traffic, and Perplexity is not in Google's list.

A custom channel for full coverage. Google's own custom channel group guide shows how to add one with a "matches regex" rule on source, for example:

.*chatgpt.*|.*perplexity.*|.*copilot.*|.*gemini.*|.*claude.*

Place the AI channel above Referral in the channel list, or the visits will be counted as ordinary referrals.

For scale: SE Ranking's analysis of 101,574 sites found ChatGPT referrals were 0.32% of all website traffic in May 2026. Expect small numbers; watch the trend and which pages receive them.

4. Server Logs: Is the Crawler Reaching You?

Analytics only sees visitors. Logs show whether AI search crawlers fetch your pages in the first place - a prerequisite for being cited.

Crawler Role Published IP list
OAI-SearchBot ChatGPT search index openai.com/searchbot.json
ChatGPT-User Fetches a page when a user asks openai.com/chatgpt-user.json
GPTBot OpenAI model training openai.com/gptbot.json
PerplexityBot Perplexity search index perplexity.com/perplexitybot.json
Perplexity-User Fetches a page when a user asks perplexity.com/perplexity-user.json
Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User Claude search and user fetches See Anthropic's help center

Filter your logs by these user agents, then check the source IPs against the published lists: user agents are easy to fake. If a search crawler never appears, check robots.txt and your firewall or CDN rules before anything else. Our AI Bot Access Rules and Crawler & Bing Preview Access checks catch the most common blocks.

5. Paid AI Visibility Trackers

Trackers run a fixed set of prompts against AI assistants on a schedule and report mentions, citations and share of voice. Prices checked on vendor pages in October 2026:

Tool Coverage Starting price
Otterly.AI ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot; more as add-ons $29/mo, 15 prompts
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit ChatGPT, Google AI Mode $99/mo
Ahrefs Brand Radar AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude Several tiers; see vendor page
Scrunch ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Meta $250/mo annually, 350 prompts
Profound Up to 9 engines Custom; 7-day trial

Why AI Visibility Numbers Jump Around

SparkToro and Gumshoe ran an experiment in late 2025: about 600 volunteers ran 12 prompts 2,961 times across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI features. The chance of getting the same brand list twice was below 1 in 100 for ChatGPT and Google AI, and the same list in the same order came up about once in 1,000 runs. When 142 people wrote their own prompt for the same intent, the prompts had almost nothing in common.

Their conclusion is a good rule for anyone measuring this: visibility percentage across dozens to hundreds of prompts, run repeatedly, is a reasonable metric; a "ranking position" in AI is not. (Gumshoe sells AI tracking, which the study discloses.) Location and personalization can shift answers further.

A Simple Measurement Setup

  1. Monthly: Search Console's Generative AI report and Bing's AI Performance report - which pages earn AI impressions and citations, and how that changes.
  2. Weekly: GA4 AI Assistant channel (plus a custom channel for Perplexity and Claude) - sessions, landing pages and conversions.
  3. On change: server logs after robots.txt, CDN or site changes - confirm OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot still reach you.
  4. Ongoing, if budget allows: a tracker with a fixed set of 50+ prompts that reflect real customer questions, read as trends.
  5. Per page: when a page you expect to be cited is not, audit it - crawler access, content in the HTML, a clear answer near the top. Our GEO guide covers the fixes.
